How we score a film: the Asli Rating method

Why our score is out of 5, what a verdict actually means, and the five things we weigh before a single star is given.

By Asli Rating

Every review on Asli Rating ends with a number, but the number is the last thing we decide.

We start with intent. What was this film trying to be? A masala entertainer and a slow-burn drama cannot be judged on the same scale, so we first ask what the film promised its audience — then how honestly it kept that promise.

Next comes craft: writing, performance, sound, edit. A film can be technically dazzling and emotionally hollow, and we say so. Finally we ask the only question that matters to you — is it worth your ticket, your data, or your Friday night?

That is where the verdict comes from: Masterpiece, Must Watch, One-Time Watch, Average, or Skip. No stars for sale, ever.
